  1. Eastleigh is almost entirely inhabited by Somalis and one of the strategic places for business, Somali community both from Somalia, Somali Kenyans and Somali Ethiopians have invested heavily in the enclave, Businesses range from small stalls to shopping malls and night lodges.

Nairobi, 01 September, 2010 (Kenya’s official population according to the latest tally released on Tuesday by Kenya’s planning and national development minister puts the population at 38.6 million people)
Out of that total number Somali Community was in number 6. Kenyan Somali (nullified awaiting recount) 2,385,572.

Unfortunately Eastleigh was in crises for the last two days and its community and the neighborhood was mainly affected by following the Sunday bomb attack on a bus or (matatu) in Eastleigh state where 9 people dead and more then 30 were injured.

This incident caused armed youth and gangster from Mathare Slums attacking business centers and residents mainly from Somali Community in Eastleigh, business centers and looting business premises that lead youth confrontation with in Eastleigh youth.

One of the major issues which disturbing the good people in Eastleigh is the police are harassing at night going trough door to door and arresting the Somali youth with no differentiating those who are Somali Kenyans who have Kenyan identification and also those who have alien id and mandates which UNHCR gives the refugees in Eastleigh so that they can stay in Nairobi Eastleigh state.

Therefore, it was left behind and destroyed property worth million of Kenya shillings destroyed by youth when angry mobs went on the rampage in the wake up matatu/ bus explosion attack.

Young men mostly between at the age of 11 to 35 years where involved and attacking business centers and looting business premises.

In addition to that they also stoned motorists along the busy Juja Road.

In this chaos several people have been injured and most of the victims sustained stab wounds while others where stoned.

These people who are attacking Somali Community beliefs that the attack was carried out by Al-Shabab radicals in Somalia.

While there is no real evidence that shows who behind this cowardly attack, the police was yet investigating the incident.

    • Ali says:

I am a youth Somali and I am almost sure that Somalis and even alshabaab have nothing to do with Eastleigh blasts. These bombings are carried out by Kenyans driven by xenophobia who want to get rid of Somalis in Eastleigh. The police violence against Somalis show that they are also driven by xenophobia. Ewe Mwenyezi Mungu sisi wasomali tunadhulumiwa. Ewe Mungu Kenya inatudhulumu. Ewe Mungu uliwapa wakenya amani lakini shukrani zao zimekuwa kutudhulumu sisi wasomali. I swear I am crying just like a baby
